The Perfect Boot

You know you wore your Matt Bernson Love Sandals to DEATH this Summer, but what will take over during the upcoming colder months? Well, if Matt Bernson can make the perfect Summer sandal then why not the perfect Autumn boot too? A little tough, but still feminine. A little riding boot-ish, but not like you’re going on a fox hunt. Oh, and definitely a yummy soft leather.
Hold up ladies! This isn’t a fantasy boot, it’s real! The Rivington boot embodies all of these characteristics you are looking for in your Autumn 2007 boot and more.

James, James. Is there anything you CAN’T do?

After graduating from Parsons School of Design (of Project Runway fame), James Coviello began his career as a jewelry designer for Erickson Beaman. Soon after that he created a line of hats sold at specialty department stores like Barneys and Bergdorf Goodman’s. it was at this point that he met another former Parsons alumna, Anna Sui. James and Anna began collaborating on a line of hats for Anna’s very first runway show and their partnership has remained strong to this very day. In fact James designs a line of knits called James Coviello for Anna Sui.
Add his own full line of ready to wear, and a specialty home line designed for Spiegel and you have the full range of James Coviello products. Talk about a triple threat! It’s hard not to be impressed by his resume but even without his magnificent credits, James has perfected his recipe for the perfect ready to wear line for today’s busy woman. A pinch of whimsy, a teaspoon of sex appeal and a whole barrelful of easy to wear pieces that are waiting to be layered in with the rest of your closet.

If it's good enough for MJ....

If it’s good enough for MJ, it’s good enough for me!
Former Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs head accessories designer, Joy Gryson, is one of the best kept secrets of handbag lovers worldwide. Her line of Bags and now shoes, Gryson, has been a staple on the “haute handbag” circuit for some time now. And its no wonder, the buttery soft leather, braided handles and tough as nails hardware is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to the “It Bag” seen on the arm (or shoulder) of many a savvy tote aficionado. So, if you’re sick of seeing every Rodeo Drive tourist carrying that same Prada, Gucci or Bottega bag that you spent your mortgage payment on, but you still want to be the envy of any woman who lugs her medicine cabinet around in her bag, Gryson is for you. Unless of course a purse is not your bag baby!

Kiwi Invasion (part one)

Kiwi Invasion (part one)
Two Seasons ago, New Zealand based designer, Karen Walker, began showing her collection at New York’s Olympus Fashion week. It’s been a love story between her and the world’s top fashion editors ever since. Widely known as “the editor’s design darling” Karen Walker expresses her style through quirky but wearable pieces that convey today’s true sportswear (a title no longer reserved for American designers). Check out what some editors have said about her Fall 2007 collection, “Karen to the Rescue”. (below)
Available at Lily Savitch a Boutique and online at www.lilysavitch.com

“For her second show in New York, New Zealander Karen Walker chose as her muse a thirties comic-book superheroine, one who leads a double life. Such a whimsical starting point could have translated into runway disaster, but Walker knows how to finesse a slightly off-kilter theme. Pretty capped sleeves on printed blouses and dresses subtly echoed standard-issue superhero fare. The designer likes to pair masculine with feminine, and here she cut menswear wools in Depression era silhouettes of the sort that once populated Katharine Hepburn’s closet. These were layered with Lycra pieces in a graphic lightning-bolt print, adding a fresh pop of humour to the serious tailoring.”
“Along the way, Walker managed to weave in several disparate elements - from bright nylon anoraks to a covetable but relatively plain-Jane black day dress - without producing the jarring feeling on a phone-booth quick-change. A year in, this designer is already establishing herself as another exciting part of the city’s growing expat contingent. ”
- Meenal Mistry, Style.com
“It’s her second season in New York and New Zealand designer Karen Walker shows no sign of slowing down. Hers is a kooky, confident customer who wants a wardrobe full of interesting, unique clothes - but who could just as well murder a well tailored little black dress. For autumn / winter 2007-8, they’ll grab a red beret as they leave the house and cram it on oh-so-casually over a shapely tweed jacket and high-waisted black trousers. Karen showed off about her new partnership with designer poet Henry Holland when the mood took her, but that didn’t threaten her serious talent for cutting - shown off most profitably by stunningly sculpted wool jackets that were elegantly shapely at the shoulder. Her light, easy-going, fashion fun touch reappeared again with touches of Lurex in a T-shirt or a belt around the neck, a pop art-style heart surrounded by lightening bolts on one model’s chest and bright blue anoraks belted by leather straps. Thirties shapes combined with modern fabrics and Walker’s signature lack of pretension gave a good, self-assured impression - this lady knows just where she’s going.”
- Dolly Jones, Vogue.com
“Karen Walker, a New Zealand designer who began showing here last season, seemed of a mind to mix references to film heroines ( sharp-shouldered jackets romantic ruffles ) with quirky takes on sportswear. That meant playful boleros and dresses done in brightly coloured poncho nylon and adorable tams and caps tied with bonnet sashes. ”
- Cathy Horyn, New York Times, U.S.A.

Spring forward, Fall back?

Every season there is always one item that haunts me till I finally breakdown (after 10 seconds flat) and just buy it. There are usually certain criteria that this “must own you immediately!” item has. Those are; 1. If I were to walk into a room full of other fashion fans will more than 60% of them ask, “where DID you get that? I MUST know!” and 2. Does this fit seamlessly in with the rest of my closet? Do I have the perfect shoes, bag, jewelry for it? In other words, is this really me?
This season that item has revealed itself to me (and the wise editors of Elle magazine) in the form of Spring and Clifton’s cashmere blend V-Neck cardigan dress ($286). In fact, I hate to admit it, but most of Spring and Clifton’s colorful cashmere blend knits seem to fit my criteria of a “must have you now” item for this season. Their knit T-shirts, tanks, dresses and scarves – would all brighten up my Fall wardrobe without too much of a dent in the old bank account. And they all layer so well with the rest of my closet it seems they have been in it this whole time!

Ladybugs

Amongst the many items I must have this Fall, a dress from duo designers Doucette Duval tops the list. Their vintage inspired shapes and fabrics remind me of the dresses my grandmother made in the former Soviet Union. She was an incredibly talented seamstress who would spend hours crafting the latest styles (taken out of magazines smuggled in from the West) for my mother and two aunts. A refreshing change from the clothing that was available to them at the time.
These days, Doucette Duval provides that necessary breath of fresh air with their beautifully constructed vintage inspired dresses. Available at Lily Savitch a Boutique! And online at www.lilysavitch.com
